Philadelphia changes nickname to the Inventors --------------------------------------------

When the Philadelphia Masterminds joined the USCL, they chose
the name "Masterminds" partly because of Julia R. Masterman's well
documented success in the scholastic chess arena. Little did they know
that there was a budding chess club that called themselves the
Masterminds, organized by Lateef Street, a Masterman alumnus. There was
no vicious copyright battle, however the Philadelphia team felt it
would be prudent to have a more independent name. It was felt that the
"Inventors" was a historical and unique name that aptly sums up the
contributions that Benjamin Franklin made to chess and to the nation in
the 18th century. Philadelphia hopes that being armed with a new
nickname will help guide them to their first ever playoff berth in 2007. Click here to go back to
