The San Francisco Mechanics Become the First Official USCL Team
-

One of the most storied chess playing cities has joined the United States Chess League. Player/Manager IM John Donaldson was excited about the prospect of joining the competition. John has already recruited two players, FM Dmitry Zilberstein and FM David Pruess and generated interest among other strong players in the Bay area. All three of the team members are around the 2450 mark, which immediately makes San Francisco a very formidable team.
"Our plan is to have a team of forwards and power forwards, but no centers" John Donaldson said, using a baseketball analogy referencing to the makeup of their team that will include no Grandmasters, but instead a group of strong and solid IM's. "We can play three players of 2400-2500 on boards 1-3 and play a 2200 on board 4. Even if we play a top heavy team, with 2600 players on boards 1-3, we think we will win on board 4, and have great chances to score at least 1 out of 3 on boards 1 through 3. Our players have the confidence and experience to play with anyone."
San Francisco chose the nickname of the "Mechanics" mostly based after their home chess club, the Mechanics Chess Club in downtown San Francisco. Other members of the team are already rearing to go for the first week in the fall. Mechanics player David Pruess said "I've always wanted to beat New York in chess and now I'll finally get the chance!". Although there is not already an official New York City team, things are already in works and New York will surely be joining the league shortly.
The San Francisco logo was unveiled today to the public:

With their great chess history, active chess scene and large pool of strong players, San Francisco should be a prominent member of the United States Chess League for years to come.
