2006 Pan-American Chess Championships

“The World Series of College Chess’’ 

December 27-30, 2006 (Wednesday-Saturday), Washington, DC

Open to any college or scholastic team from North, South, or Central America

A USCF National Event 

· Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship (6-Round Team Swiss)

Each team comprises four players and up to two alternates (from same college or university). 

· Pan-American Scholastic Team Chess Championship (6-Round Swiss System)

Each team defined as top four finishers from same school (grades 1-12).

Winner receives four-year tuition scholarship (worth $62,438) to UMBC. 

· Pan-American Closed (6-Round Swiss System)

Restricted to alternates, faculty, coaches, and other members of any college or scholastic delegation. Other individuals are invited to play in the nearby Eastern Open.

Guaranteed room rates (includes breakfast): $138/night single or double, $160 triple or quad.

Easy walking distance to restaurants, museums, and the National Mall. 

Schedule (same for all events). Exhibition Match* (4-player single elimination, G/10): 12-27 1-3pm.

Reception: 3-4pm. Opening Ceremony: 12-27 4-5pm. Rounds: 12-27 6pm, 12-28 10am and 5pm, 12-29 10am and 5pm, 12-30 9am. Closing Ceremony: 12-30 3-4pm. Travel on 12-26 and 12-31.

[* Open to top three FIDE-rated players from Intercollegiate and Scholastic (but at most one player per school), plus top FIDE-rated “wildcard’’ player who enters.] 

Time Controls (same for all events). 40moves/2hrs, SD/1hr (each game lasts up to 6 hrs.)

Rules. FIDE rules. USCF and FIDE rated. Pairings by FIDE ratings (or equivalent). 

Prizes (all unconditionally guaranteed).

Intercollegiate: $2000-1000-500-250, class and board prizes ($200 each), trophies.

Scholastic: four-year tuition scholarship to UMBC (currently worth $62,438), trophies.

Closed: $800-400-200, class prizes ($200 each), trophies. Exhibition Match: $1000-500-250-250.

Game Prizes (all events combined): Best Ending, Best Combination, Best Upset (Chronos Clock each). 

Entry Fees (same for all events). Players and alternates $120 per person, if postmarked by 11-17-06 ($150/person late). Non-player social fee $60/person ($80 late). Alternate fees include optional entry into Pan-Am Closed. All include reception and snacks at each round. 

Travel. Fly into Reagan National Airport (DCA)—closest, Dulles International (IAD), or Baltimore-Washington International (BWI). Or take Amtrak to Union Station. Discount travel groups will be established. The hotel is near the Chinatown Metro stop (Red/Green/Yellow Lines).
